KB2003022401 - How to get a proof for handling the flickering screen issue on HP/Dell laptops

This knowledge base is created for the users who need to get proof for handling the flickering screen issue. This flickering screen handling issue has been back and forth between the user, internal IT, vendor helpdesk support, and vendor on-site technician. A typical symptom is that flickering within a week, gradually a few days and then daily. By documenting this procedure, this will speed up the escalation process.

Instructions

The laptop needs to connect to an external monitor.
Follow the step below if the screen starts flickering.

Step-by-step guide:

  • Minimise all open applications on the screen. Leave just the desktop only.

  • Take a short video aiming at the laptop screen as well as an external monitor.

If the flickering happens on the laptop only BUT not the external monitor, this is related to the laptop screen issue NOT the video driver.

  • Take another short video while trying slowly to close the laptop lid halfway through and then reopen the laptop lid again all the way at the end and then put back as normal the lid. Do that a few times.

This closing and opening movements are to see if the flickering is intensifying or not. This is related to the cable on the laptop hinge.

  • Once it's done, shut down the machine and wait till the computer off.

  • Turn the device on by pressing the power button.

  • The BIOS menu will show up

  • Take another short video aiming at the laptop screen only.

  •  Click the button to proceed to restart the machine as normal
