KB1903020701 - How to tether the Apple iPhone to Microsoft Windows 10

This knowledge base is created for users who need to tether the iPhone to Windows 10. This article covers two type of connections: WiFi and USB Cable connection. The easiest setup is via WiFi connection.

Instructions

WiFi Connection

Step-by-step guide:

Prior following this step, unplug USB cable from the iPhone if any.

  • At the laptop/desktop search bar, type in Settings and hit enter.

  • At Windows Settings, click the Network and Internet.

     

  • On the left navigation, click WiFi.

     

  • Set the WiFi on.

     

  • On the left navigation, click the Flight mode.

  • Ensure the following:

    Flight mode: Off
    WiFi: On
    Bluetooth: On

  • On the left navigation, click the Mobile hotspot.

  • Ensure the following:

    Mobile hotspot: Off

 

  • To get the Wi-Fi name on the phone, tap the Settings.
    Tap the General.
    Tap the About.
    Make a note for the Name as this will be used for the Wi-Fi name.

  • Go back to Settings, ensure the initial settings as followed:
    Aeroplane Mode: Off
    WiFi: On
    Bluetooth: On
    Personal Hotspot: Off
    VPN: Off

  • To start tethering on the phone, tap the Settings.
    Tap the Personal Hotspot.
    Allow Others to Join: On
    Note down the Wi-Fi password.

  • Continue tethering on the laptop/desktop, on the Windows search, type in: WiFi settings and press the Enter button.

  • Click the Show available networks link

     

  • Find the WiFi name. This is the WiFi name of your phone. See the step above.

  • Enter the password of WiFi. This is the WiFi password of your phone. See the step above.

  • If the connection successful, you will see two rings icon on the top of the phone - next to the time.
    Also on the laptop/desktop, the networks should display as the Wireless icon at the Windows task bar.

  • To disconnect, on the phone, tap the Settings. Tap the Personal Hotspot. Allow Others to Join: Off.

USB Cable Connection

Step-by-step guide:

Prior following up this step, the laptop/desktop needs to have Apple iTunes installed.

  • At the laptop/desktop search bar, type in Settings and hit enter.

  • At Windows Settings, click the Network and Internet.

     

  • On the left navigation, click WiFi.

     

  • Set the WiFi Off.

     

  • On the left navigation, click the Flight mode.

  • Ensure the following:

    Flight mode: Off
    WiFi: Off
    Bluetooth: On

  • On the left navigation, click the Mobile hotspot.

  • Ensure the following:

    Mobile hotspot: Off

 

  • On the phone, ensure the initial settings as followed:
    Aeroplane Mode: Off
    WiFi: On
    Bluetooth: On
    Personal Hotspot: Off
    VPN: Off

  • Plug the iPhone into the computer using the cable.

  • On the phone, the window pop up for Trust This Computer? Select the Trust option.
    The laptop/desktop beeps the sound and iTunes app pops up.

On the phone, ensure the lightning icon showed up inside the battery icon. This means that the phone is connected and it is charging.

  • On the iPhone, tap the Settings.

  • Tap in the Personal Hotspot.

  • If the connection successful, you will see two rings icon on the top of the phone - next to the time.
    Also on the laptop/desktop, the networks should display as the Desktop/wired icon at the Windows task bar.

  • To disconnect, on the phone, tap the Settings. Tap the Personal Hotspot. Allow Others to Join: Off
