KB2002020401 - Troubleshoot on the searching issue for Outlook 2013/2016
Problem
When searching the email on Outlook, the error comes up: Something went wrong and your search couldn't be completed.
The search result will show up and complete eventually, but the error still displays. Also, the user mentioned that the recent search result will not show up only the old ones.
Solution
Step-by-step guide:
Close the Outlook.
Run again the Outlook.
After launching the Outlook, if it is using a third party connector i.e. Zimbra Outlook Connector, there is a potential an update of Microsoft Office and it needs to run by the administrator. User with fewer privileges can ignore this message and Outlook still be able to operate as normal but not the searching.
The message as follow:
The registry settings installed by the Zimbra Connector for Outlook (ZCO) have been changed. This might be due to a recent Microsoft Office updates.
ZCO will now launch an external program to reset the registry settings. You might see a User Control message box asking for your permission.
Please allow UAC to run the external program. If permission is denied, some ZCO features will not work correctly.
Test the search by typing in the search bar and see if it's returning partially or nothing at all.
Ensure click the Outlook search bar (i.e. Inbox or another folder)
Click the Search Tools option and select the Index Option
Check the index status whether it is a zero or not
If it the search result is good, there might this pop will come back again after few days.
If that the case, update the registries as follow:For Office x64:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\REGISTRY\MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows Search\Preferences
D00FDE68-3E80-4f8c-899D-D9DD16BA7D1D - REG_DWORD 0x1
FA9628A0-F223-4d5d-B314-E01BC8100572 - REG_DWORD 0x1
For Office x32:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\REGISTRY\MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows Search\Preferences
D00FDE68-3E80-4f8c-899D-D9DD16BA7D1D - REG_DWORD 0x1
FA9628A0-F223-4d5d-B314-E01BC8100572 - REG_DWORD 0x1
If it is still not, continue to the next step
Do the Office Quick Repair in Control Panel > Program and Features and right-click and select the Change option and then select the Quick Repair option
This Quick Repair option will take about 10 minutes and this will not attempt to rebuild the index.
Open the Outlook again
Check the Index Option Status.
Try to search again.
If it's still not being able to search properly, then Rebuild the Index in Control Panel > Index Option
